ABOUT COLLINGWOOD

Newsletter Fall/Winter 2009

The Blue Mountain Watershed Trust Foundation was incorporated in 1995 and is composed of independent watersheds that originate in the Niagara Escarpment (a United Nations World Biosphere Reserve) and drain directly into Georgian Bay. Major watersheds include Silver Creek, Black Ash Creek, Townline Creek, Pretty River and Batteaux River. In 1998, our watershed area was extended west to include Indian Brook and Beaver River and their tributaries. Our area of interest forms a rectilinear shape bounded by the Georgian Bay shoreline to the north and the highlands of the Niagara Escarpment to the south — an area totalling approximately 50,000 hectares.

The Blue Mountain watershed boasts a unique and diverse natural environment. It supports a wide array of terrestrial and aquatic wildlife while providing a setting which attracts tourists to a region that is much cherished by local residents for its natural beauty. It is also the source of the Amabel Aquifer, a source of pure water for this area and population centres to the south, such as Kitchener-Waterloo. Because of this unique natural environment and geographic location, the watershed is under great pressure to support increasing recreational, urban and rural activities. As part of a World Biosphere Reserve and because of its social, economic and ecological value, the Blue Mountain Watershed Trust Foundation is committed to ensuring the continued environmental health and integrity of the BMWTF watershed.

Another challenge that faces the watershed is its independence from larger river systems, such as the Nottawasaga to the east. The individual watersheds that comprise the BMWTF have the potential to be excluded from watershed planning documents and strategies. To complicate matters, numerous upper and lower tier governments, each with their own land use priorities, have jurisdiction over portions of the BMWTF watershed. These municipalities include Simcoe and Grey Counties, Clearview, Collingwood, Grey Highlands and the Town of the Blue Mountains.
